East Asian Youths Speak

A Collaboration of York Region District School Board (YRDSB) and 105 Gibson Centre

Date: From March 18th to June 24th, 2022
Time: 4:30pm-6:00pm (Biweekly)

Overview:

A platform for all YRDSB Secondary students to unfold their East Asian multiple identities and reach their aspirations through dismantling barriers. We encourage East Asian youths to explore leadership opportunities and find innovative ways to explore their own identities.

Goal:

To empower East Asian youths in constructing a self-narrative that is inclusive of their multiple identities and creating healthy communities of practice.

Description:

The program consists of three phases. During the first phase, we hope to build a safe platform for East Asian youths to discuss their aspirations and get to know each other. The second phase, we will explore students’ multiple identities and how their stories have a significant impact on their self, relationships and society. The final phase of focus is on building awareness and empowering students to support the creation of communities of practice through web-based collaboration. The school social worker would be the primary holder who helps students to post slideshow videos or posts they made on an official Instagram account.  Parents will be informed about their child’s participation in this program. Students will have the opportunities to become one of the guest speakers for “YRDSB Tune-in Podcast”  and discuss Anti-Asian racism.
